The Golden Isles Kingfish Classic is this weekend and will be celebrating its 16th anniversary. We found the article below interesting, in that it touches on the history of the event a bit.
This year, however, Golden Isles will be especially significant this year because it will host the second fixed professional stop on the SKA tour. As is the case with most SKA fixed events, the SKA’s website will have a live video stream from the weigh-in.
Here’s an excerpt to the above referenced article:
"The fishing is just better in August on the Georgia coast," Poe said. "If you noticed, all the other Georgia tournaments have started later, too. There were two in May originally, now they’re all in July or August. There’s kings here pretty much year ’round, but I think there are bigger kings and they’re more concentrated in July, August and September."
The tournament has received a boost, thanks to its association with the Southern Kingfish Association. The SKA has been involved since the tournament’s inception, and having pro sanctioning brings about an additional 90 boats to the tournament each year.

Corey Durako and the Blew By U! fishing team set the East Coast Got Em On Classic tournament record this weekend after scaling a 56.6 lb toad on Sunday. (Keep in mind this tournament is in it’s 31st year which makes breaking the record all the more meaningful.) The Blew By U! was fishing in 65 feet of water 18 miles off Southport along with about 25 other teams. At 2:30 the record setting king ate a ribbon fish rigged with a Barefoot chinweight on the downrigger. Angler Richard Gilligan fought the massive king to the boat where Durako handled the gaffing duty 45 minutes after the strike. The celebration was heard throughout the fleet when that fish come on board. Durako and his crew finished 5th in this tournament last year which demonstrates the consistency of this talented team.
50 lb kings are somewhat of a rarity in NC summertime tournaments, perhaps this is a sign of things to come, as there was a 58 lb fish caught the day after the Jolly Mon a few weeks ago and the there was another big fish bite off Southport on Monday. NC tournament season is really heating up! Hats off to Ty Cobb and the rest of the Got Em On committee for putting on yet another first class show. This was posted on TCPalm.com:
The event will run from Nov. 2-7 with a new format featuring four days of competition along with five nights of organization activities. Previously, the championship featured a week’s worth of functions, but only two days of fishing.
The announcement means there will be a huge economic shot in the arm for area hotels, restaurants and marinas two weeks prior to Thanksgiving weekend, said Tom Collucci, executive director of the Treasure Coast Sports Commission.
“When we did it 2006, there was a $1.9 million economic impact,” said Collucci, referring to the most recent of the five times the Treasure Coast has been the tournament’s host community. “Total room-nights that we could track were 1,533 room-nights for area hotels.”
Kingfish Connection: NBOA really came onto the competitive king mackerel fishing scene recently. Can you give us a brief history of the company? What services does NBOA provide anglers?
The National Boat Owners Association (NBOA) began in 1984, as a boater’s interest group that offers everything the boating lifestyle needs – from insurance and finance to lifejackets and towing programs. As its core, NBOA is a company designed for boaters, by boaters. We’ve continued to grow over the years by sticking to our values and providing boat owners with quality service, great marine insurance rates, and access to various specialty programs and discounts in the marine industry.
