Tournament will accept no more than THREE fish from any boat on any tournament day. |
Dan:
This is one thing a lot of people have a problem with. When's the last time a boat could enter more than one fish per boat (unless it's for a junior or lady angler). The Open continues to accept as many fish as possible because they understand that a good portion of their income comes from the commercial sale of the fish.
And I guess the problem also falls on the anglers and captains that support it. You'd be surprised to hear how many people say, "I don't know why they don't go to a single big fish format," and "I hate that they still take all these fish," but these are the same boats offloading their catch at the dock. Money takes precedence over morals I guess.
I've been fortunate enough to fish all over, but have never and will not fish the Open or any other event that allows 500 boats to weigh 3 fish each. Do the math, and then try to catch a kingfish the weekend after the Open.

I am with you Sam. I have been fairly vocal in my opposition to this event solely because of their "conservation" policy. Granted they have improved from the 6 fish a boat per day "conservation" policy but I still see no reason to participate. The part I find most distasteful is that they actually encourage the weighing of multiple fish through payouts for distant places such as 104th and also special prizes for specific weights like 15.20 pounds and such. Given the current state of the fisheries in NC it is a shame. In 2000, it took 75# to qualify in division one, this year 77# won it and we all wonder why. Obviously it is not all this tournaments fault but they sure aren't helping matters. Unfortunately most do not see it the same way. It is a very succesful event, usually one of the top three in NC in attendance. They do a great job in give away prizes such as fish bags for all boats last year.
